Red wine is generally best consumed at room temperature after the wine has been opened and allowed to breath. Glasses designed for red wine characteristically have rounder wider bowls, intended to allow the wine to breath and to cool more quickly after having been warmed by the drinkers hand.
Bordeaux glasses tend to be tall with a wide bowl designed for full bodied reds like Merlot and Cabernet. Burgundy glasses tend to have a larger bowl that is intended to contain the aromas from the more delicate red wines like Pinot Noir. Both designs direct the wine towards different parts of the mouth. The Bordeaux glass routes wine towards the back of the mouth whereas the Burgundy glass directs wine towards the tip of the tongue.
